This week of guided E-MTB rides will not disappoint . The village of Alte, your home for seven nights, is the base for an annual mountain bike event that attracts hundreds of riders from all over Portugal. This is one of the best events of its type and the abundance of excellent tracks in the area is one of the main attractions for mountain bike enthusiasts. The well-trodden Via Algarviana hiking trail also passes through the village and provides alternative challenging options for riding straight out from your accommodation. And, as if this is not enough, you can test your skills along the well known route that follows the Ribeiro (stream) do Algibre, cycling amongst the thick vegetation and navigating rocky paths that form a single track not to be missed!

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival

Upon your arrival in the Algarve, we will collect you and transport you to your accommodation in the charming village of Alte, famous for its fresh water springs.

The daily guided rides will be based upon the following ride descriptions and can be adjusted by our local guide according to the group’s ability and preferences.

Day 2 Via Algarviana and Silves Circuit

Taking the Via Algarviana out of the village there are some great trails that include steep, cobbled or rocky stretches so you can make good use of your battery power to help you on your way. You will head towards Messines – a typical agricultural town, with narrow streets and a church as the centre piece. Following more fabulous dirt tracks you will skirt the Barragem do Arade (a huge reservoir that is one of a few providing much needed water to the locals) towards Silves, a town steeped in history with an imposing castle and the perfect place for a café stop or lunch.

Day 3 Malhão ascent

You will cycle towards Malhão, one of the Algarve’s two iconic climbs. It is not an overly long ascent, but what it lacks in distance it makes up for in gradient. You will be navigating some of the many mountain bike tracks that scale the side of the hill. They vary in difficulty but are made more manageable with the Ebike. The hill top Bhuddist stupa provides an opportunity to reflect on your achievement as you take in the far-reaching views over the surrounding countryside. It is a challenging, scenic and rewarding day culminating in some fabulous descents down to Pé do Coelho and through the valley back to Alte.

Day 4 Via Algarviana to Salir

Here is another opportunity to ride a section of the increasingly popular long distance trail, the Via Algarviana, which traverses the hinterland of the Algarve from the Spanish border to Cape St. Vincent, the Western most point. It is a perfect way to test your riding skills, with long climbs, single tracks and rocky outreaches. It is a chance to immerse yourself in the unspoiled nature as you cycle along remote stretches towards Salir, another pretty Algarvian village with castle ruins and a very authentic local feel.

Day 5 Ribeiro do Algibre

Heading south towards the Ribeiro do Algibre you will navigate some 12km or so of almost continuous single track. It is not an official trail like the Via Algarviana, but it is a well-known  mountain bike loop which allows you to explore a wilder, inland side to the Algarve. This shaded valley ride follows the Ribeiro, lined with willows, oleander and cork oak. It is mostly dry throughout the summer but in the wetter months you can expect to see flowing water, shallow pools and small cascades. You will most likely stop in Paderne, another typical Algarve village with a ruined castle on a hill above the Algibre valley. This is also a great place for a café stop.

Day 6 Alte and surrounding areas

Today you can check out some of the best single tracks in the area, many of which comprise the famous Alte BTT (an annual race for serious mountain bikers). In fact there are routes to suit all levels and the terrain is a mix of dirt roads, gravel tracks and rocky trails, so there is literally something for everyone. Your guide will suggest options according to your ability and preferences.

Day 7 Optional Rest Day

This is an optional and well-deserved rest day. But if the week has left you wanting more, you can easily repeat one of the earlier rides or try something new, which your guide will suggest for you.

Day 8 Departure

We will transfer you from your accommodation for your journey home.
