Highlights

Meeting at our shop in Albufeira, it won’t be long before we are heading away from the busy coastline towards the traditional old village of Paderne. Paderne is set in a lush green valley, making for a very pleasant start to our ride. It is also the gateway to an expansive and peaceful rural landscape, packed full with trails, ideal for mountain biking, that are punctuated by sleepy villages and working farms. It’s a far cry from the bustling tourist destinations that hug the coast.

As we navigate our way along quiet roads and tracks (you can easily go half an hour without seeing another human being), there is plenty to arouse the senses as we cycle through fragrant orange and lemon groves. The fresh country air and beautiful, unspoilt scenery makes for an extremely pleasurable ride, where the kilometres just seem to disappear without you really noticing!

There are a few hills en route, but worth it for the stunning views across the countryside and along to the coast . Our cafe destination on this ride is the quaint hillside village of Alte, famous for its white painted houses and fresh water springs. There is a beautiful church in the centre of the village, surrounded by cafes and craft shops, selling locally produced goods. A coffee and pastel de nata (custard tart) on the back terrace of the pasteleria, Agua Mel, is a must. A short stroll around the village will reveal some lovingly restored houses and lots of little surprises, including a village donkey!

Heading back in the direction of Paderne we often pass through the ancient village of Rocha Amarela, abandoned in the late 1960s with the introduction of tourism into the Algarve; many of the previous inhabitants gave up on their rural existence and sought work and money in the tourism industry on the coast. Many of the houses in the village remain intact, though without regular care they are starting to deteriorate and fall apart. The village is in a very tranquil setting near the top of the hill and gives some insight into the rural lifestyle of a bygone era. The ride down offers some splendid views as well as some challenging tracks, before we meander our way back to Paderne .

This tour offers some of the most scenic and varied landscapes in the Algarve and can be enjoyed by all levels of bikers, since the abundance of trails and routes in this area means that we can tailor make tours to suit everyone.
